BeBot webserver hosting questions
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:40:43 am »
Hi there,

I recently got the BeBot client up and running for AoC.  Took a few tinkering and .conf updating per forum updates to get it to work properly.

I was thinking on how I did not want to have my computer running 24/7 and wanted another means to have the server running.  I was either going to get a simple server box (old computer) or consort to using a php, mysql support webhosting server.  The site that I'm using is x10hosting.com.  I managed to set up a MySQL database, but I am baffled on what i need to do next to have it working remotely.

What other things could I do to step closer to my goal?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You would need shell access, not sure if jailed works. I would suggest a VPS/dedi

Any shared shell access would welcome your aoc account to be compromised. Furthermore you will need to edit the bot files to disable the 'webserver killswitch'

I dare picking this topic up again although it might mostly be but the sort of "are you really, REALLY sure" stupid question, however:

I've not even started my bot running, but so far it had always been my idea to launch it on any sort of rented/free webspace / website-server. For the reason given in the op; I've no server-pc, don't want to / can't run my own, don't want my guildmates to only have a bot when I am online with my machine.

So, first thing I discover when looking into the main.PhP is this line:

Quote
"   die("BeBot does not support being run from a web server and it is inherently dangerous to do so!\nFor your own good and for the safety of your account information, please do not attempt to run BeBot from a web server!");"

- Hence my question: are you really, REALLY sure there is no option for me how I could run the bot somewhere else than on my own PC?

You can run it on a webserver, but there is couple reason you shouldnt do it:

- Most webserver providers do not allowe you to run background processes
- There is files in BeBot folder that can be displayed over http that shouldnt be viewed public (.ini,.log,.txt files)
BeBot wasnt written with http browsing in mind, so there could be security holes if .php files are browsable over http..

By webserver, i believe you are thinking about a webhotel or a folder that is browsable via http (apache).
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.
- Sorry, i dont have time to reply question on PM. Make a topic.

I personally run the guild bots i host, off of a cloud VPS, (that i use for web hosting, but none of the clients i host have any need to login, i do everything they need.) If you did that, could trust your hosts security and them with ur pw, you could run it in a non http directory. 'shared http + shell' would work too, just but it a level above http. HOWEVER if they share shell others with shell can compromise the system and ur pw.

I suggest using F2P accounts with random passwords, with random emails, maybe ur sever domain emails (for more than one bot) and of course, give no guild permissions, or bank access, or another toon on accnt with such.

Do not have the opportunity to have paid the server. In what free server running bebot?
Can anyone ever have the opportunity to put my boat in their own server.
Sorry for my English.
